How to Set Intentions With Candles

How to Set Intentions With Candles

People have paired flame with intention for as long as we have had both: birthday wishes, prayer candles, vigils. There is something in us that understands lighting a flame as a way of marking a moment and making it matter. Here is how to use that instinct deliberately.

What an intention actually is

An intention is not a wish and not a goal. A goal lives in the future and measures itself. An intention lives in the present and directs your attention. I want to be less stressed is a wish. I am protecting ten quiet minutes for myself today is an intention. The candle’s job is to give that intention a beginning, a scent, and a physical anchor in the world.

The practice

Choose your intention before you strike the match: one sentence, present tense, honest. Light the candle slowly, and as the flame takes, say your intention silently or aloud. This is the moment the ritual is made; the flame now stands for the intention.

Let the candle burn while you do whatever the intention needs: journal, rest, work on the thing, or simply sit. Each time your eye catches the flame, you are gently returned to what you chose. When you are finished, blow the candle out and take one breath of acknowledgement. The intention does not end with the flame; the flame simply held the door open.

Choosing the right candle for the intention

This is where scent and crystal matter. A calming intention wants a calming scent: lavender, soft woods. A courageous intention wants warmth and spice. At Jade and June, every candle is built as a ready-made pairing: Luna for rest, Maia for courage, Ceres for beginnings, Pomona for harmony, so the fragrance and the crystal are already speaking the same language as your intention.

If you are not sure which intention is calling loudest right now, take the candle finder quiz; it has a way of telling you.
