How to Cleanse Amethyst and Activate It
Knowing how to cleanse amethyst is the first step to working with it well. Every amethyst that arrives in my studio gets the same welcome before it goes anywhere near a candle. I clear it, I hold it, and I give it a job. This guide walks you through the same steps, so your amethyst feels fresh, bright and ready to use.
You will learn five gentle ways to cleanse amethyst, how to activate it with a simple intention, and the one mistake that can fade its colour for good.

Why cleanse amethyst at all?
Amethyst has long been used as a calming stone. In crystal tradition it is the stone of quiet minds, restful sleep and clear intuition. It is linked to the crown chakra at the top of the head.
Crystal lovers believe stones hold on to the energy around them. A stone that has travelled from a mine in Brazil or Uruguay, through a wholesaler, a shop and a post office, has passed through a lot of hands. Cleansing is a way to clear all of that and start fresh with your own intention.
There is a practical side too. Cleansing is a habit that makes you stop, pick up your stone and notice it. That pause is where the ritual begins.
Cleanse your amethyst:
- when it first comes home
- once a month, around the full moon
- after a hard week, an argument or an illness in the house
- whenever it looks or feels dull to you
Five gentle ways to cleanse amethyst
Pick the method that suits your stone and your week. You only need one.
1. Moonlight
Set your amethyst on a windowsill or outside overnight, ideally on a full moon. Bring it in before the sun gets to it in the morning. This is the easiest method and the one I use most.
2. Smoke
Light a stick of Palo Santo, let the flame settle to a glowing ember, then pass your amethyst through the smoke a few times. Open a window so the smoke has somewhere to go. If you are new to it, my guide on how to use Palo Santo covers the basics.
3. Selenite
Rest your amethyst on a selenite plate or beside a selenite wand for a few hours or overnight. Selenite is known as a cleansing stone in its own right, so it does the work for you. This is a good choice for small tumbled stones and jewellery.
4. Sound
Ring a bell, strike a singing bowl or simply clap a few times over your stone. Sound suits amethyst clusters and geodes that are too big or too fragile to move.
5. Breath
Hold your amethyst close, breathe in slowly, then breathe out over it with a clear thought of letting go. It takes ten seconds and works anywhere.
A note on water
Amethyst is a hard stone, so a quick rinse under cool running water is fine for a raw point or a tumbled stone. Pat it dry straight away. Skip water for clusters on a rock base, anything with metal fittings, and stretch bracelets like our Amethyst Crystal Bracelet, because soaking weakens the band. Avoid salt water altogether.

How to activate amethyst
Cleansing clears the stone. Activating it gives the stone a purpose. In crystal practice this is also called charging or programming. It sounds technical, but it is a five minute ritual you can do at the kitchen table.
- Choose one intention. Keep it short and in the present tense, such as “I sleep deeply” or “I am calm when things get busy”.
- Light a candle. I use our Luna Candle, lavender and tonka bean with amethyst set into the wax, so the scent and the stone work together.
- Hold your amethyst in both hands. Take three slow breaths.
- Say your intention out loud, or quietly in your head, three times.
- Picture the stone holding that intention for you.
- Place it where you will see it. Beside the bed suits sleep. On the desk suits focus.
That is it. Each time you look at the stone, it reminds you of the intention you set. If you would like to go deeper, my guide on how to set intentions with candles builds on these steps.
Where to keep your amethyst
- Bedside table, for rest and quiet
- Desk or study, for clear thinking
- Meditation corner, for intuition
- Worn on your wrist, so the intention travels with you
The one mistake that fades amethyst
Keep amethyst out of strong, direct sunlight. Its purple colour can fade with long exposure, and once it fades it does not come back. Sunlight cleansing works for many crystals, but amethyst is not one of them. Moonlight gives you the same ritual without the risk.
A few more care notes:
- Dust it with a soft, dry cloth.
- Store it apart from harder stones so it does not scratch.
- Take your bracelet off before you swim, shower or use hand cream.
Find the crystal that suits you
Amethyst is a lovely place to start, but it is one of seven crystals in our candle range. If you are not sure which stone fits what you need right now, take our candle finder quiz. It takes a minute and matches you with a candle and crystal pair.
